Thai authorities successfully raided an illegal bitcoin mining operation in Ratchaburi on August 23. The raid came after residents reported frequent power outages. The bitcoin mining operation was found to be consuming electricity that the occupants of the house were not fully paying for.
Authorities in Thailand announced on August 25 that they had raided a suspected illegal bitcoin mine in Ratchaburi, a province west of Bangkok. Officials moved in on the illegal mine after residents complained of frequent power cuts for more than a month.
According to a report, Thai police and officials from the Provincial Electricity Authorities (PEA) raided a house where bitcoin mining operations were found on August 23. Jamnong Chanwong, a chief district security officer, said the seized devices suggested the occupants of the house were mining bitcoin but were not fully paying for the electricity consumed.
“We found bitcoin mining rigs, pointing to people using this house to operate a mine and using [the] power they didn’t fully pay for,” Chanwong said.
